Pansies Watercolor Painting

These pansies remind me of sherbert with their peach and grape color. I've used my three color palette of one red, one yellow and one blue but with a slight change - I've used a cool rose red rather than the warm bright red that I've been using. This makes a more true shade of purple for the petals. This will be a good Spring and Summer palette saving the brighter red for when the leaves fall in autumn.

Pansies, Viola, Botanical painting

The other day, I stopped at the hardware store and saw they now have pansies for sale. I love this time of year when the weather is still cool because this is what pansies like! So I just had to get some and plant them in a big pot in my garden. And I just had to paint them too. As botanical illustrations are done from the live plant under controlled lighting, I brought the pot inside to do this detailed botanical painting.

Swans in a Garden Pond Watercolor Painting Demonstration

It's Spring and the nesting season has begun for many birds. I love the graceful ballerina beauty of swans, so my demo painting today is of a mother swan with her little cygnets. Above you see a 5x7 sheet of watercolor paper taped to a board with the composition drawn on it and a few soft washes of color to shade the birds and denote their reflections. I've also washed the background and water with pale blue.

This painting is done by mixing a limited palette of one red, one yellow and one blue.

Flower Cart

In this painting, you can see the cool morning light shining on a pretty garden scene.

The painting was inspired by one of many such scenes that I saw while on the garden tours in Newport, Rhode Island held in June every year. Homeowners on the quaint streets of the historic part of town open up their garden gates to let visitors get a glimpse of their lovely gardens.
