Here are a few more paintings from the water lily pond at the botanical gardens in Hawaii. I like the painting above for the suggestion of colorful koi fish swimming just below the surface of the water and the little ripples made when they come up for food.

Below, is another view of the pond, this time with emphasis on the reflections and quiet ripples around the flowers and buds.

White Water Lily at Taylor Pond watercolor painting

Just HAD to paint this scene of a water lily from Taylor Pond at the local nature preserve. The lilies bloom so prettily there, and when I caught sight of this beauty, it took my breath away...the blueness of the pond reflecting a clear late summer sky, the little beadlets of water on the edge of the lily pads, the pure whiteness of the flower, the little ripples and reflections on the surface. These kind of things excite my paint brush!

"Water Lilies"

If you have ever visited the Dole Pineapple Plantation on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, you know that there is a fun train ride through the pineapple fields. You also know that pineapples do NOT grow on trees - a revelation for me. Below is how they grow (those little rose-colored things are baby pineapples ). Click the image to see it larger.

Yes, they really do grow on the ground!

"Koi in a Lily Pond VI" - for sale in my Original Art Shop

This painting of koi fish in a waterlily pond is a 14"x20" watercolor using only three primary colors with most of the color mixes happening wet-into-wet on the paper. I made a video that you can see below in which I talk a bit about my technique and the composition.

Waterlily Pond and Dragonflies watercolor painting

It's September and the waterlilies are still blooming prettily on the pond though the lily pads are beginning to turn russet and gold colors. Here and there a red maple leaf has drifted down to lay on the sapphire blue water.
A couple of dragonflies swiftly dart back and forth above a white lily adding a bit of lively energy to this colorful piece.

This twelfth painting of koi focuses on the beautiful white waterlily which takes center stage. I really enjoy these koi paintings especially painting the water. By wetting the paper and dropping in color, I never really know how it will turn out until the paint is dry.

This koi painting takes a different view than my others which were seen from above the pond. In this scene, we go below the water's surface and see the lily pads from underneath with the light filtering down from the surface. As in all my paintings of koi, this is done with a limited palette of three primary colors.

Koi in a Lily Pond X - watercolor painting

A pale pink waterlily blooms in this painting of koi. As in all my koi paintings, I use a three-color process in this piece. The three primary colors - red yellow and blue - are freely allowed to flow into each other creating the secondary hues of orange, green and purple. This makes for a dynamic painting!

In this fifth painting of koi, the highlights from the swirling water flow over the fish as well as around them. The fish move in an arc in one direction, while the water flows in the opposite direction making a lively composition.

Here is a third painting of koi with white lilies this time. I like the swirling effects of the water in this one and the sunlight reflecting on the surface. The fresh spontaneity of watercolors is very evident in this piece.

Waterlily - Oil painting

There are many different types of waterlilies. This is a particularly lovely pale pink with interesting scalloped leaves. It was blooming in Kew Gardens in London.

I took a long walk down to the Nature Preserve the other day, and was delighted to see the lilies blooming on the pond. All the yellow buds had opened into white blooms. Couldn't wait to do a painting of them, so here it is! It was a gorgeous day; you can see the sun sparkling on the wet lily pads.

Waterlilies

Today I took a walk on the wild side - at the nature preserve to be precise. It was a perfect day, cool, breezy and sunny. I stopped by the water to take in the beauty of waterlilies decorating the pond when a little red dragonfly buzzed past. He's a perfect addition to this painting.
