Would you like to go to Scotland?

My sister and her husband took a trip to Scotland several years ago. The photos she took were just beautiful. (And now I want to go!) This painting  is inspired by one of her photos taken when looking northwest at sunset over Loch Leven from Ballachulish, Scotland.

I painted a 5x7 inch watercolor of this scene from the Scottish Highlands at that time and I like it so much that now I'd like to paint it in oils on 8x10 inch panel.

Autumn Harbor Seascape Plockton Scotland Watercolor Painting

A quaint harbor in remote Plockton, Scotland was the inspiration for this painting. The harbor is on Loch Carron, which is an inlet from the sea in the rugged northern part of Scotland.

I painted this piece to demonstrate to my watercolor students how reflections are made when broken up by movement in the water. The yellows, russets and greens of early Autumn in the trees along the shore make colorful reflections, don't they?

Harbor at Plockton, Scotland on Loch Carron - watercolor painting

The town of Plockton on Loch Carron in the Scottish Highlands is a quaint town of a little over 300 people. It seems a strange place for palm trees, but the cabbage palms that grow there benefit from the mild climate which the sheltering hills and North Atlantic Drift provide. Here is a view of the harbor with the hills behind.

Plockton is a tiny village in the northwest highlands of Scotland on the shores of Loch Carron. The houses date from the 18th-19th centuries when it was founded as a fishing village. This picturesque area with its mild climate is popular with tourists. It's so pretty, it's not hard to see why!

Lambs in Plockton, Scotland

Two lambs with soft long tails seem to love these yellow wildflowers blooming in a field in Plockton, Scotland. The sunlight plays in dappled patterns on their white wool coats.
