If you have ever visited the Dole Pineapple Plantation on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, you know that there is a fun train ride through the pineapple fields. This twelfth painting of koi focuses on the beautiful white waterlily which takes center stage. I really enjoy these koi paintings especially painting the water. By wetting the paper and dropping in color, I never really know how it will turn out until the paint is dry.
This koi painting takes a different view than my others which were seen from above the pond. In this scene, we go below the water's surface and see the lily pads from underneath with the light filtering down from the surface. As in all my paintings of koi, this is done with a limited palette of three primary colors.
A pale pink waterlily blooms in this painting of koi. As in all my koi paintings, I use a three-color process in this piece. The three primary colors - red yellow and blue - are freely allowed to flow into each other creating the secondary hues of orange, green and purple. This makes for a dynamic painting!
I'm still painting koi - this is the eighth painting in the series. In this piece, three koi swim lazily by some blooming waterlilies.
In this fifth painting of koi, the highlights from the swirling water flow over the fish as well as around them. The fish move in an arc in one direction, while the water flows in the opposite direction making a lively composition.
Here is a fourth painting of koi. Watching the movement of koi in a pond is very relaxing. I was looking to capture that peaceful feeling in this piece.
Here is a third painting of koi with white lilies this time. I like the swirling effects of the water in this one and the sunlight reflecting on the surface. The fresh spontaneity of watercolors is very evident in this piece.
Here is a second painting of koi. This time I've added some water lilies. Watercolors are an exceptional medium for this type of painting as the flow of colors makes the water come alive!
I saw these Koi in a garden pond when visiting a butterfly conservatory recently. The action of the fish moving and the swirling water is contrasted by the serenely floating lily pads in this painting.
