Thanksgiving is almost here and time to think how much I am thankful for. Of course, one of the top things on my gratitude list is that my army son is safe at home and done with his service after over 4 years serving during some of the worst fighting in Iraq.
I'm also so grateful for the fact that I'm still painting. It's been a challenging year to say the least. One of my students recently went to a museum lecture where she heard that only 5 percent of artists of all types make a living at their art. Wow.
I'm immensely grateful for the wonderful people who collect my art. Without them, I would not be in that 5 percent group. What are you thankful for?

Coconut Island, Hawaii watercolor

Palms and tropical flowers frame this scene of a cove in Hawaii's Coconut Island. The water is a clear turquoise in the shallows near a beach on the farther shore. Mountains rise in the distance. It's a lovely little bit of paradise!

Great Blue Heron - watercolor

The feathers of this great blue heron are all fluffed making him a pretty sight indeed!

Here is a second painting of koi. This time I've added some water lilies. Watercolors are an exceptional medium for this type of painting as the flow of colors makes the water come alive!

A chestnut mare grazes in a field in this typical New England scene. So often, I drive by scenes like this in my daily travels. Such peaceful scenes really catch my eye and make great subjects for paintings.

Pink Peony oil painting

Peonies are a favorite flower of mine because my Polish grandmother used to grow them in her city garden. I believe she had the loveliest flower gardens on the block, tiny yard and all, and these flowers figured prominently along with all types of roses.
This one is especially pretty with its pom-pom-like white center.

Balloon Flower oil painting

A close-up of a flower can give the painting an abstract quality. Until seeing this balloon flower in such detail, were you aware of the colors and patterns at its center? Balloon flowers are so named because their flower buds before opening look like hot air balloons. Once opened, they are a favorite of hummingbirds.

This scene from the Maine Coast shows powerful surf crashing onto the rocks along the Marginal Way walk at Perkins Cove. This is a favorite area for visitors who enjoy the majesty of the ocean.

Great Blue Heron oil painting

The sky is blushed with pink early one morning as the Great Blue Heron lifts off to find a good fishing spot for the day. These herons are majestic in flight. I have tried to capture that in this painting along with the stillness of the lake at dawn.

Red Amaryllis Flower oil painting

Just about this time of year, brightly colored boxes of Amaryllis bulbs appear in the stores here. If I plant one now in a pot indoors, this pretty tropical flower will bloom in time for Christmas. The red and white Amaryllis in this painting, though, was blooming in the park in Hamilton, Bermuda when I was there in the spring.

I saw these Koi in a garden pond when visiting a butterfly conservatory recently. The action of the fish moving and the swirling water is contrasted by the serenely floating lily pads in this painting.

American Robin in a Crabapple Tree - watercolor painting

Every day now there is a flock of migrating robins in my crabapple tree. The tree is loaded with fruit and they are well fed, pulling off and gulping one crabapple after another! But soon they'll have to move on as the weather turns colder. For now, I enjoy seeing them and enjoy painting them. Here is one of them resting between snacks.
