Wedding Flowers - A Custom Painting in Oil Part 2

Now that the background and foreground for this oil painting is finished, it's time to paint wedding flowers!

Cut flowers need a vase or a pot so I'll paint it before the flowers that go into it. See below for how this painting is finished:

Here was how we left the pot last time. Some detail has been added, but it's still pretty basic:

I now add some dark floral designs and more definition to the sculptural parts:

The floral designs are actually raised reliefs, so I use lighter colors over the dark paint to give that effect:

Now I can start painting flowers! The bride's favorite flowers include hydrangeas, so it's not a surprise to find them here. Also, gladiolus. All the flowers will be white:

Before painting the sprays of white flowers against the background, I paint out the white areas with a thin wash of color. Since the rest of the background is now dry, I can still see the lines for guidance, but they will not show up in the painting:

I don't know what these flowers are called, but they are quite pretty!

Below is the painting so far. The stems at the top will be full of those same small white flowers.

The lower part of the arrangement has many tiny flowers with yellow-orange centers:

A few fallen petals add a nice touch:

Now the pot is loaded with flowers! I took some time to add leaves and adjust the values of all the smaller flowers so that the hydrangeas would stand out and not get lost in all the detail. You can click on the completed image below to see it larger:

The bride and groom stood on the brick patio between two of these pots of flowers to take their vows. I hope the painting brings many treasured memories to the happy couple of their very special day!
