East Beach, Rhode Island Watercolor Painting Demonstration

East Beach is a favorite Rhode Island beach for nature lovers. It's definitely my favorite. This barrier beach runs in a strip for 2 undeveloped miles along the coast, perfect for a long walk at water's edge. Portions of it are designated for wildlife since seabirds nest along its length. On the grassy dunes wild beach roses bloom in summer.

I was delighted to be contacted by someone who found my work on this blog and asked for a larger painting of the beach. I'll share how I painted this watercolor below:

Orchids Tropical Flowers from Hawaii - watercolor painting

Pretty magenta and white orchids cascade gracefully from a single stem in this original watercolor painting with the hint of more orchids in the background. I found these flowers in the botanical garden in Honolulu.  So many lovely flowers there!

Orchid Spray - Hawaii Tropical Flowers watercolor painting

A spray of delicate orchids in magenta and white caught my eye at the botanical gardens in Hawaii. Their petals seem to dance and move in the tropical air. I painted a deep blue/green background to set off these tiny dancers.

Araucana Lullaby , the Adventures of Ferdinand and Nina in Zehland

Part II Episode 6 in the Adventures of Ferdinand and Nina on Botankikah Pond.

" As daylight faded to night, a full moon rose and cast a bright glow over the dark water of Botanikah Pond. The conversation between the three friends had dwindled from an excited chatter to an occasional peep or purr until the only sound was the chirping of crickets and a lone tree frog in the distance.

Berthe got up and stretched...'time to sleep,' she meowed."

This is an excerpt from Part II Episode 6. The original painting is sold, but the limited edition 8"x10" print with story will be available at a future date at Zehland.Etsy.com as well as on Ferdinand and Nina's new website.

Yes, they are getting their very own website and I'll let you know when that is ready. At that time, all of the images and stories will be transferred from this blog to their new home. They can't wait! I'll keep a link to the site here on the blog so you won't lose them. :)

White and Yellow Orchid Flowers Watercolor Tropical 23

Number 23 of the Tropicals Collection is a delicate white orchid that I discovered in the botanical garden's conservatory. Though orchids bloom outdoors in Honolulu's Foster Botanical Gardens, some require more humidity than is found in Hawaii's perfect climate. They keep these colorful orchids from South America and other tropical places in a steamy hot house in the gardens. The flowers are swinging from the rafters and climbing up small trees. These delicate white orchids with bright yellow centers were blooming close to the ground.
