Medley of Autumn Oak Leaves - watercolor painting

The maples here have all dropped their leaves and I've been busy raking them up. But the oaks still hold onto most of theirs for a few more weeks keeping the landscape alive with their russet colors.
This is called a "medley of oak leaves" because I've painted different varieties of oaks. That's how they appear on my lawn - a mixed bunch! I've added some acorns as well! Pin It

White Rugosa Rose - oil flower painting

Rugosas are lovely roses that bloom by the seashore or in your garden. This one was blooming along the Marginal Way seacoast in Maine. Pin It

Tiger Lily watercolor painting

Tiger Lilies watercolor paintingTiger lilies carry some nostalgia for me as they bloomed in the yard where I lived as a child. They are among my favorite lilies.

Like in all my autumn watercolor scenes, only three colors were used in this piece - a red, a yellow and a blue. No more are needed. I love the color effects that can be made by letting these three colors run together on the watercolor paper. Even though this isn't an autumn scene, the same technique and colors work very well with tiger lilies. Pin It

Peony Flower - oil

Peony Flower oil painting This version of my favorite pink peony flower is done on Ampersand panel. I had some kicking around and decided to try an oil on smooth panel as I've always painted on canvas or canvas board. How is it? Great! I love how bright the colors are. Pin It

Autumn Leaves - watercolor

Autumn Maple LeavesWhat fun it was to do this painting as it involved a walk on a crisp autumn day to pick up a few pretty leaves. Much more fun to paint them than to rake them. But, I'll be having to do that next! Pin It

Dahlia Flowers - watercolor

Dahlia flowersPeople are digging up their dahlias now in this area to store them for winter as it's already snowing. I don't have any - these are inspired by a neighbor's garden. He told me if I come by next spring, he'll give me some as he has so many. I may just take him up on it - dahlias are so pretty.

Carolina Wren in a Garden - watercolor painting

Carolina Wren and garden flowersThe pretty climbing flowers climbing on a fence post were part of a garden I saw while in Ogunquit, Maine. I wish I could tell you what kind of flowers they are - somewhat like morning glories, somewhat like petunias, but neither of those.
The little wren was inspired by a Carolina wren that flew down to sit on my porch rail while I was out on the porch the other day. It sang and hopped about looking at me all the while and only a couple of feet away. I could have reached out and touched it! Perhaps it was trying to tell me to fill the feeder with its favorite seeds. Not sure, but so cute! I thought it would make a perfect addition to this painting.

Autumn Maple Leaves - oil painting

Autumn Maple LeavesJust about now, mid October, is when the maple trees are their most brilliant colors in New England. I love taking a walk or driving through the countryside to see the foliage. Here are some leaves from my maple trees.

Maine Coast watercolor seascape painting

Maine Coast and seagulls watercolor seascapeAlong the Marginal Way in Ogunquit, Maine, there are so many beautiful vistas of the sea. I loved this scene of seagulls resting on some of the many rocks along the coast. The grasses have turned golden and the sun sparkles on the water in this autumn painting.

White Orchid Flowers - oil painting

White Orchids oil paintingA few days ago, I and a family member took a trip to a butterfly conservatory. It was humid, warm and tropical inside and along with hundreds of beautiful butterflies were some lovely flowers. Way up near the plexiglass roof I spotted these lovely white orchids blooming. What a treat! I decided they needed to be in a painting. Pin It

Autumn Trees Reflections in a Pool - watercolor painting

Reflections of autumn trees in a poolOn my last walk at the Nature Preserve, I was struck by this intimate scene of a small pool formed by one of the many streams.

Pools like this fascinate me because of the many image layers. First there is the layer that shows the surface of the water on which lie the floating leaves and the water ripples. Then there is the reflection of the trees which makes the water seem like a mirror. Finally, because the water is clear, there is the suggestion of rocks and pebbles at the bottom of the pool.

I've tried to capture all these image layers in this piece.
