A stunning view of the powerful ocean will be found along the Marginal Way walk in Ogunquit, Maine. Here is one such scene with the ever-present rugosa roses blooming in the foreground.
I drove up to Ogunquit, Maine yesterday. It's a beautiful quaint town on the ocean and it was a perfect day, so I went for a long walk along the seashore. At the fishing harbor, this scene caught my eye - colorful boats lined up at a dock.

What I love about PeeGee hydrangeas is that they continue to look beautiful even as the flowers turn color and fade. These are turning a deep rose shade and the shrub is just as lovely as when the flowers were blazing white.
A Great Egret - in the foreground - and a Snowy Egret share the shallows of a pond. Isn't this a serene painting? I can just hear the soft plopping sound as they dip their bills and wade through the water.
I have to say I had fun with this painting. Perhaps that was inspired by these adorable babies at a nearby llama farm. I'd stopped to take some pictures of chickens and the owner came out. He told me he thought I was looking for the "babies." Then, I saw them - five of them, and were they cute! Doesn't it look like Cleo (the one on the left) has things to say to Alex? He's listening with one ear up. The background colors imply sunlight streaming through the trees and make me think of the bright colors of South America, where llamas originate.

These are from my tree which is loaded with crabapples. The birds will appreciate these come winter. They make a beautiful deep, rich painting.

The colors of autumn are richly represented in this impressionist painting of mums. I love mums as they bloom so much later than other flowers. These are some from my garden.

The town of Plockton on Loch Carron in the Scottish Highlands is a quaint town of a little over 300 people. It seems a strange place for palm trees, but the cabbage palms that grow there benefit from the mild climate which the sheltering hills and North Atlantic Drift provide. Here is a view of the harbor with the hills behind.
The crabapple tree is loaded with fruit and this goldfinch stops to rest on a branch. I love seeing the bright yellow flash of these birds as they zip across the yard.
A beautiful white egret lifts off from a pond at the local nature preserve in this watercolor painting. This is a place I enjoy visiting frequently as it is only a mile and a half walk from my home.

Pumpkins and chrysanthemums, a basket full of treasures from the garden, and a couple of hay bales make a perfect autumn painting.
Even though peak autumn foliage season is still several weeks away, some of the maples are already starting to turn golden and orange. Cool nights and warm sunny days make this time of year a real pleasure!
The PeeGee hydrangeas in my area have become more and more beautiful with their big soft, fluffy blooms tinged with pink. They are irrisistable to paint!
This is such a peaceful scene from Scotland. Mountains rise in the distance and a boat is anchored on a still lake. I can imagine the soft sound of lapping waves against the shore and the cool feel of the air.

Here is one of my very favorite flowers - heavenly blue morning glories. I love to grow them and I love to paint them. There is something about their twining vines, heart-shaped leaves and heavenly blue trumpet flowers that is captivating!

Going for a walk the other day, I saw Black-eyed Susans blooming by the fence that surrounds a neighboring field. I thought some coneflowers in the background would make a nice addition. The dappled sunlight is delightful in this little scene!
With the coolness of late summer in the air, the hydrangeas are in their glory, their big white blooms tinged with pink. In early morning, I took a walk up the road to where a neighbor has them growing in a row by the roadside. He's an elderly gentleman, but is out every day tending the gardens. His hydrangeas are beautiful!

Delicate and lacy-leaved, the cosmos are blooming now. Finally! It seemed they never would. Here is one of them with hydrangeas leaves in the background.
I've been enjoying using a wet-into-wet color pouring technique for some of the backgrounds in my watercolors. I almost always start a painting by doing the background. Starting with rich color that runs and blends together gets a painting like these hibiscus flowers off to a exciting start!
This perky rooster struts in the early morning sun ready for a new day. He makes a very colorful painting.
Delicate rhododendron blossoms are always a favorite of mine. These were blooming on a very large bush in Kew Gardens, London.
