Peach-pink Poppies - Watercolor Painting

These poppies are eye-catchers. I was driving along to the store when I caught a glimpse of them planted along the roadside. They were so pretty, I turned the car around and went out to snap some photos, knowing they might not be there for long. Lucky I had my camera along! Pin It

Bantam Rooster - watercolor painting

This rooster is a bit of an arrogant one - look at him standing so proudly with his tail feathers held high! He's all set to rule the roost. Pin It

Purple Pansies - Watercolor Painting

These purple pansies are being misted by a gentle rain making their petals curl. Somehow that makes them seem so real!

Newport, RI Harbor - Watercolor Painting

There are dark clouds in the sky, but the sun is peeking through in this scene of a harbor in Newport, Rhode Island. There are beach roses blooming behind the fence and daylilies in a small garden on the right. Out beyond the anchored boats is a line of sailboats. It almost appears that they are racing, they are so close together, and indeed they may be as there are many sailboat races in the area. Pin It

Sabbaday Falls, White Mountains, New Hampshire - Watercolor Painting

The White Mountain National Forest is one of my favorite places to visit. In Springtime especially, the mountain waterfalls are gushing with an abundance of water. The water over the many centuries has sculpted the rock into smooth formations that can make one think of a waterslide. In fact, the safest ones are often used that way in the hot summer months. This is a cool, refreshing scene at the very top of Sabbaday Falls where a cascade of water falls into a deep green pool among glacial rocks. Painting this scene makes me want to be there now! Sunset Beach, Hawaii - Watercolor Painting

A dramatic sea surges landward under a blazing sky. The sunset has stained the water a deep rose color and a dark cloud passes by as swiftly as the surf rushes in. Sunset Beach has spectacular surf and blazing sunsets. I tried to capture its drama and motion in this painting.

Double File Viburnum Blossoms - Oil Painting

Oh, you should see my viburnum tree! I suppose it is really a shrub but in form looks like a small tree about eight feet high. The double file variety as I've painted here has white blossoms that bloom along each branch in double rows. The result is spectacular especially when the sun is shining on it. The only thing I regret about this beautiful shrub is that I planted it at a back corner of the house where it can't be seen driving up the driveway. But when I'm at my kitchen window, I can see it past the lilacs. When they are both in bloom along with the rhododendron, it's a sight to behold! Pin It

Pansies - Oil Painting

The pansies in my flowerpot just get prettier by the day. What I love about them is that they are not affected by rain or cold. They are so perky! Here is a colorful and bright painting for you.

Rose Red Rhododendron - Watercolor Painting

When art students come to my studio, I start them out with drawing exercises as it really helps to know how to draw if you want to paint. The other day, I brought this bloom in from the garden for them to practice their drawing skills. Then we worked on a painting of a different subject. But, as they were leaving, the sunlight shining on the rhododendron caught my eye. I sat right down to paint it. This is one of those pieces which is so fresh and spontaneous that it appears to have sprung right onto the paper of its own accord. It's a special one! Pin It

Iris Garden - Watercolor Painting

A riot of colorful iris bloom in this piece. Some are pinkish and some bluish purple. The yellow "beards" make a nice contrast and add vibrancy to the painting. The iris are just beginning to bloom here and their fresh beauty is irresistable to paint! Pin It

Mystic Seaport Harbor - Watercolor Painting

A beautiful colonial seaport on the Connecticut shore, Mystic keeps alive the flavor of the early days with historic homes, cobblestone streets and its seaport with tall sailing ships. There is an outdoor art festival held every August in which I've participated many times. When the weather is good, there's not much that can beat doing a show in Mystic! Pin It

Swallow in a Summer Garden - Watercolor Painting

Here is a lovely summer garden in full bloom with black-eyed Susans, Cleome, and many other flowers blooming. A swallow swoops down among the flowers. Pin It

Lilacs - Watercolor Painting

I can't believe how the lilacs are blooming this year! Not only in my yard but everywhere I go the shrubs are loaded with more blossoms than I've ever seen. As I painted this piece, the scent of lilacs floated in the open window. It's heavenly! Pin It

Pink Azaleas - watercolor painting

It was a snowy winter. Azaleas don't seem to appreciate heavy snow sitting on them for weeks on end. So my pretty pink azaleas are blooming only at the bottom. I guess I'd need to live in a warmer area to have them be happy. But they're still pretty and they bloomed enough for me to paint a sprig of blossoms. Pin It

Dogwood Blossoms - Watercolor

These beautiful blossoms are from my dogwood tree. I used two new colors in this painting (new for me) - Opera Rose and Manganese Blue. I love the soft effects I could achieve in the shadows with these colors. Pin It

Ka'ena Point, Hawaii Sunset - Watercolor

Just a tinge of pink in the eastern sky, but the setting sun has turned the cliffs a fiery red at Ka'ena Point, Hawaii. I like the color contrasts in this scene between the blue of the ocean and the orange-red of the rocks. Pin It

Waterfall Garden - watercolor

This is a gorgeous garden with a waterfall tumbling beside a stone stairway: a beautiful, relaxing place to unwind - sitting and listening to the sound of falling water, or taking a stroll on a summer evening.

Roses on the Maine Rocky Coast - Watercolor Painting

A wind-swept day, but the sun is warm and the salt air fresh. A seagull circles overhead and wild roses bloom in the foreground. This painting of the Marginal Way shows the beauty of the Maine coast. I love the blue in this painting.A shipment from my art supplies dealer arrived today and I'd ordered manganese blue which I've not used before. I had to do a painting with it right away. It makes the perfect color for the sea and sky when used with cobalt blue in the sky and a bit of green in the sea. Pin It

Stargazer Lilies - Oil Painting

Such beautiful fragrant lilies. Stargazers are as delightful to paint as they are to behold! Pin It

Pink Rose - Oil Painting

One of my favorite roses from my garden, this sweetly scented beauty makes a rich, velvety painting in oil.

White Phlox - Oil Painting

Pretty phlox is blooming wild by the roadsides now that the weather is warmer. This variety is a garden variety which blooms later in the summer. I loved painting the delicate mounds of tiny flowers. Pin It

Flower Bouquet of Roses & Daisies- Watercolor Painting

Here is a bouquet that won't fade! I was inspired to paint it when my wonderful offspring gave me a bouquet of roses, daisies, pink carnations and a few other flowers in the mix for Mother's Day. They stood there grinning in the living room and said "Happy Mother's Day" when I walked in the room. I gave them hugs and wondered what my youngest was laughing about. He vehemently motioned with his head to the table and there I saw a pretty bouquet. And a card which said I am Queen. Queen of lazy subjects who don't listen very well. (smile) That's what the card said.
Well, I just had to paint some of the flowers in the bouquet, so I got right to work. Had to work fast, because we were going to my own mother's to spend the day with her. But, here it is in all it's prettiness.

Chickadee & Crabapple Blossoms - Watercolor Painting

The crabapple tree was full of chickadees the other day flitting around among the blossoms. I'm wondering if they are the family that was raised last summer in the birdhouse hanging in that tree. Right now, the birdhouse is occupied by a wren mother sitting on her eggs. But, when those babies have fledged and I've cleaned out the box, perhaps one of these little birds will build a nest in it again. Pin It

Yellow Warbler in a Crabapple Tree - Watercolor Painting

The other day, I looked out my studio window and saw this little warbler in my crabapple tree. The tree is loaded with blossoms and bees looking for nectar. The warbler was darting and flitting all throughout the tree. I know they eat insects, but was it eating bees? That I don't know, but it was a pretty sight to see this bright yellow bird and I couldn't resist painting it. Pin It

Hawaii Sunset - Watercolor Painting

The sun setting over the ocean is a beautiful sight and a Hawaii sunset is especially spectacular. The sun is a blazing white ball in the sky as it sinks to the horizon reflecting its glory in the ocean below. I love the cloud effects in this painting. Pin It

This picturesque garden shed is typical of those found on the grounds of historic homes in New England. Columbine is blooming in the foreground and colorful flowers line the stone walkway. Pin It

Maine Rocky Coast - Watercolor

The rugged, scenic coastline of Maine is an excellent place to take a walk especially if there is a good footpath. This was from the walkway called the Marginal Way in Ogunquit, a lovely and popular place to feel the cool fresh salty air and hear the surf crashing in. A pair of cedar trees frame the scene. White Narcissus Flowers - Impressionist Oil Painting

These relatives of daffodils are sweetly scented, tiny and delicate. To paint them, I've use a mixture of thin washes in the shadows and thick brushwork where the morning sun highlights them giving this painting an impressionist look.

Conch Sea Shell - Oil painting

With the warmer weather upon us, I think of walking by the seashore picking up shells and pretty stones. Maybe I'll just have to take a ride to do that soon! Here is a conch shell on the sand with the sea foaming in behind. I love the colors!

Narcissus - Oil Painting

Some people call these daffodils, but I've always known them as narcissus. Whatever you call these white spring bulb flowers with the deep yellow centers, they are a lovely sight in the spring. They follow the yellow daffodils in my garden.
I especially like how this painting turned out with the sunlight reflecting many colors onto the white petals of the flowers.

Cove at Ka'ena Point, Hawaii - watercolor painting

This is a scene from Ka'ena Point State Park on the island of Oahu. A small cove provides quiet waters away from the crashing surf. I love the color of the water here - such a clear blue-green in the shallows. Flower bloom in the foreground and ever-present seabirds soar in the distance. Pin It

Bleeding Heart, Dicentra - watercolor painting

These beautiful bleeding heart (Dicentra) flowers are blooming in a shady spot in my garden now. How graceful and delicate the heart-shaped flowers are! Pin It

Pink Crab apple Blossoms - oil painting

These crabapple blossoms are from my tree which is in full bloom now and humming with hundreds of bees. The tree is at its most perfect bloom with a few darker pink buds opening along with fully opened blossoms. I just had to capture it to keep it that way! Pin It

Pink Single Peony - oil painting

A favorite peony of mine to paint. This single pink peony is a delight in my garden. Though the flower heads are large, it is not as heavy as the full round peonies and so stays upright rather than dropping over. I hope you like it too! Pin It
