I love how this white Peony has little touches of red near the center. I've added a bud to the upper left corner. Painting peonies is a challenge, but I think they are one of the prettiest flowers for a painting.

White Peony - Acrylic Canvas Painting
I love how this white Peony has little touches of red near the center. I've added a bud to the upper left corner. Painting peonies is a challenge, but I think they are one of the prettiest flowers for a painting.

American Goldfinch & Pink Crabapple Blossoms - Watercolor Painting
I saw a male goldfinch at the feeder the other day. He was halfway into acquiring his pretty lemon yellow spring plumage. In winter, they are a dull color. He was mottled with bright yellow and dull olive green. But by the time my crabapple tree is in bloom, he'll be beautiful! In this painting, you see him in his full glory...and the tree as well.

Bryce Canyon, Utah - Watercolor Painting
Bryce Canyon in Utah is like a magical fairy world to look at it, and in fact, early geologists thought the rocky spires and arches could cast a spell on people. Here is one view of the magnificent rock formations of Bryce Canyon.

Pink Mountain Laurel - Watercolor Painting
Mountain laurel is the state flower here. It grows all throughout the woods being a native shrub. How beautiful when it is in bloom in pink or white! In this piece, I've painted a pretty pink laurel.Pin It
Tulips - Watercolor Painting
This is an example of a painting that turned out much differently than I'd originally planned. Sometimes a painting has a mind of its own, and this is one of them. It started as one tulip with a medium blue background. But that didn't work, so more tulips sprung to life on the watercolor paper with deep reds, blues and greens flowing around them. The result is deep, rich, jewel tones in this piece. A bit different for me, but I like it!

White-tailed Tropicbird at Hawaii Shore - Watercolor Painting
This is a beautiful bird, and if you are lucky enough to see one swooping over your head at close range, it can take your breath away! The pure white of its feathers reflects the colors of the tropical ocean.White-tailed tropicbirds are seen on tropical islands in the Atlantic and Pacific where they will come in from the ocean to breed in spring. They lay a single egg into a small hole in a coral cliff or in the ground. The rest of the year, they remain largely out at sea. In Bermuda, where I had the pleasure of seeing them, they are called Longtails.
This scene is a Hawaiian beach late in the day. A tropicbird is searching for food before dark. I am very pleased with the sky and the reflection of the sunset colors in this painting. When painting sky with watercolors, it's such a delight because you never know exactly how it will turn out. You wet the paper in just the right spots, drop in the paint and see what happens!
- This painting has been sold. You can find more of my bird paintings for sale in my Etsy shop: Zehland Bird Paintings. Have a great day!
Daffodils - Watercolor Painting
Very pretty white daffodils with a pale yellow in the center of the trumpet, these daffodils will bloom alongside my driveway as they do every year. Right now, I can see their green shoots coming up out of the ground and growing taller every day. Soon they'll be blooming and nodding their dainty heads in the spring breeze.Girl in a Flower Garden with Bluebird - Watercolor Painting
Here is me when I was little.... No, seriously, it's not, but it very well could have been. I loved flowers and animals as I still do. The little girl in this painting is one I met some years ago. Her mother gave me permission to photograph her, but I never did a painting until now. She seemed a perfect fit for this garden scene. If you look closely, you see a look of wonder and delight on her face. Turning around, posies in hand, she caught a glimpse of a garden ornament in the shape of a dragonfly. That's a delight enough, but even better, a bluebird has alighted on the dragonfly's curled tail! I love how this painting turned out with the sunlight coming from behind and shining through the girl's straw hat brightening it like a halo. - The original painting is sold, but contact me if you would like a print or a painting done just for you.

White Ibis flying over a Salt Marsh - Watercolor Painting
White Ibis can be seen along the eastern Gulf Coast of the US. A beautiful bird with a red mask and black wingtips, they flock together to feed in salt and fresh marshes. Normally they will fly in a string. In this painting, they have just taken off and are getting into their positions to form a line. I love the motion in this painting with the flapping of wings - you can almost hear it!

Bewick's Wren & Crocus - Watercolor Painting
I'm so happy to see the Crocus blooming in my garden. Finally! And this little Bewick's Wren is happy that there are now some insects to find under the leaves. There are a couple of old dried oak leaves among the flowers. Darn! I thought I'd raked them all out last fall. But I included them in the painting because they contrast so nicely with the fresh new flowers of spring. Friday, March 20, 2009
Cone Flowers - Watercolor Painting
Echinacea is the botanical name for Cone Flowers. In this painting, I've added two tiny visitors to these flowers - a bumble bee and a little yellow butterfly. Cone Flowers are irresistible for many nectar seekers, so I just had to paint them in!Monument Valley, Utah, Mitten Buttes - Watercolor Painting
These three enormous buttes in Utah's Monument Valley suggest mittens because of their shape and so they're called the Mitten Buttes. You can take a drive around them and enjoy the amazing view of these geologic formations. You can see part of the road in this painting. I've painted them in the very early morning when the sun is tinting the scene with a rosy pink color.- This painting has been sold.
New England Stone Barn - Watercolor Painting
With all the stone we have here in New England, you'd think barns made of stone would be more common than they are. But they are a rarity. This one is only about a mile from my house. I've painted it in autumn with an oak tree in the foreground, its leaves turned a rusty orange. A pretty scene it is! - This Painting has been sold. But if you'd like a print, contact me. Check my shop for more barn paintings.
Sunset Beach, Hawaii - Watercolor Painting
A beautiful beach on the island of Oahu, Sunset Beach is spectacular with its mammoth surf when the sun is setting. In this painting, the sun is a ball of white fire in the sky. I've painted some people strolling the beach in the distance so you can see the size of the waves crashing in.Tuesday, March 17, 2009
Cat in a Flower Garden - Watercolor Painting
In this scene, a black and white shorthair cat snoozes on a brick wall oblivious to the beauty surrounding her. What an abundance of petunias, black-eyed Susans, foxglove, and other flowers all blooming at once. That wall looks like a nice place to sit with a good book, but you might have to move the kitty.

Blue Irises - Watercolor Painting
Yellow Cactus Flower - Acrylic Canvas Painting
Cactus can have the most beautiful flowers, but some of them bloom for only a day. Those that I have growing in my south-facing windows bloom longer (when they finally bloom), but they don't have the scorching summer heat to contend with. The flower in this painting is as pretty as a yellow rose.- This painting has been sold.
White Waterlily - Acrylic Canvas Painting
I loved painting this and the pink waterlily that matches it (see my listings). I can just feel the warmth of the summer sun, the buzzing of dragonflies zooming by, the croaking of frogs on the pond and the cool breeze ruffling the petals of this white lily. - This painting has been sold.
Pink Waterlily - Acrylic Canvas Painting
I had fun painting this. It takes me to summer days and an idle stroll by a lily pond, taking time to soak in the beauty and enjoy the peaceful scene.- This painting has been sold.

Rose-breasted Grosbeak & Dogwood Blossoms - Watercolor Painting
With spring on the way, the Grosbeaks will be returning to this area to nest soon from the West Indies, Mexico and South America. Then we'll be hearing their pretty song. I have to smile at the description of the song in my Peterson's Bird Field Guide: "resembles a Robin's song, but mellower, given with more feeling (as if a Robin has taken voice lessons)."Well, that's about the best description you can get. I have painted this male Grosbeak in my dogwood tree in bloom. With the contrasting values and colors, I think it makes a beautiful painting! I hope you agree.
- This painting has been sold.
Great Blue Heron - Watercolor Painting
This heron almost looks like he just swallowed a fish, the way I've painted him standing with his beak in the air. At any rate, he's a beautiful sight! - This painting has been sold.

Mother Swan & Cygnets - Watercolor Painting
This painting came about because of a dream I had. Well, not exactly a dream, but do you know when you are just about to wake in the morning, you are half-asleep and something comes to your mind? It was that kind of thing. The image of a mother swan and her little cygnet came very vividly to my mind and I couldn't wait to do a painting. As it turns out, since paintings always tell me what to do rather than the other way around, there are three cygnets. It just worked out better. I'm very pleased with how my dream painting turned out!- This painting has been sold.
Hibiscus - Acrylic Painting
This salmon-colored flower is one of the many varieties of hibiscus that bloom in Bermuda. Every house has its hibiscus hedge!- This painting has been sold, but you can find more of my flower paintings and prints in my Etsy shop: JanetZeh.Etsy.com.
Honolulu, Hawaii from across the bay - Watercolor Painting
Looking across the bay, the foreground alive with tropical flowers, you see a bit of Honolulu, its buildings gleaming white against a backdrop of hills.- This painting has been sold.
Pink Camellia Flower - Acrylic Painting
I saw this pretty flower in Bermuda in their botanical gardens. It's almost a pale magenta - a lovely color! - This painting has been sold, but you can find more of my flower paintings in my Etsy shop: JanetZeh.Etsy.com.
Lily Garden - Watercolor Painting
What a pretty garden! I painted a different view of this garden some time ago. The estate where it is located is not in my area, but I know the landscape designer who has taken photos of his work for me to use for my paintings. Of course, being an artist I can change what I want, adding or subtracting things here and there. The gardens are lovely, but a painting is a creation of its own!In this scene, yellow daylilies and pink Stargazer lilies bloom interspersed with Black-eyed Susan and other colorful flowers. A path on the left leads to a garden gate. Wouldn't you love to take a stroll here on a summer evening?
New England Farmhouse - Watercolor Painting
This farmhouse is just down the road from where I live. It's one of the many small farms in my area. I think this scene exemplifies the spirit of country folk: the practicality and national pride. A weathervane sits outside the kitchen window where the inhabitants can tell at a glance which way the wind is blowing. A tractor sits ready for the owner to jump back on it and get out to the fields. A US flag flies proudly and the fence is decorated for Independence Day celebrations, although the decorations stay up year-round!If you stop by for a visit on a hot summer day, you're likely to be served a tall iced tea and all the latest small town news. The lady of the house will tell you proudly of one grandson serving in the military and point to the big house up on the hill that is another grandson's home. Stay and chat long enough and you may be just in time for the fresh apple pie coming out of the oven. They'll be glad to share it with you!

Great Egret & Snowy Egret - Watercolor Painting
These two egrets look like buddies wading in the water together. Though they are similar, they are not the same. The one on the left is a Great Egret - it's a bit larger and has green at the eyes and a yellow bill. The one on the right is a Snowy Egret with a black bill and little flipped-up feathers at the tail. If its feet were out of the water, you'd see that they are bright yellow. I painted the water very smooth and still so that their reflections are clear and undisturbed, almost like looking in glass. - This painting has been sold.
Summer Garden- Cone Flowers & Black-eyed Susans - Watercolor Painting
A garden brimming with Cone Flowers and Black-eyed Susans is a colorful sight. I had wanted to paint this for some time but kept putting it off because of all the flowers. Because it's a watercolor, I had to paint around each individual flower to do the background. I haven't counted them, and I don't plan to. But now that it's done I think it was worth the effort! - This painting has been sold.
Pink Rose -Acrylic Painting
The snow has melted today as fast as it came down last week. It feels positively tropical with temperatures in the 60's F! The daffodils are pushing up out of the ground unfazed by all that snow and I'm looking forward to flowers in the garden. The roses won't be blooming for some time, so here is one that won't fade!- This painting has been sold.
Hydrangea Blossom - Acrylic painting
This hydrangea blossom has soft sunlight brightening its petals. The painting has the feeling and freshness of early morning in the summer garden.- This painting has been sold but if you would like a print or a painting done for you, let me know and I'll be happy to help you out. Yosemite National Park - Watercolor Painting
Black & White Short-hair Cat, "Miss Alice" - Watercolor Painting
This delightful kitty was rescued from a shelter by some kind-hearted folks whom I know when she was a kitten. They had intended to only foster her until a home could be found, but she won their hearts and she's found a permanent home with them. Though they soon discovered Alice is deaf, she exhibits some very amazing behavior for a cat.First of all, Alice loves her cat carrier and runs to the door when she sees someone about to go out. She wants to go for a ride in the car too! Does this cat realize she's a CAT?? It gets better... If someone in the household takes a shower, Miss Alice jumps right in. She gets herself all soaking wet, purring all the while the warm water pours over her. Then, she totally expects to be blow dried and brushed. That's when Alice seems like she's in heaven!
This is not like any cat I know. My own freaked when exposed to water or a cat carrier. But Alice is a special cat. Anyone who ever meets her at once feels the calm and warmth this kitty exudes. What a good thing it is that she was rescued!

Pink Chrysanthemum Flower - Acrylic Painting
I love chrysanthemums because they bloom at the very end of summer when it's too cold for anything else. Here is a large pink one surrounded by flower buds.- This painting has been sold.
White Cosmos Flower - Acrylic Painting
Cosmos are a pretty annual flower that grow quickly from seeds. I love the delicate look of the flower and the feathery leaves. I've painted this white cosmos with the sun lighting it up so it positively glows!- This painting has been sold.

Pink Dahlias - Watercolor Painting
Dahlias with their colorful shaggy flower heads are a favorite of many gardeners. There is a fellow in ,my town who grows a big colorful bed of large dahlias close to the road where all can enjoy as they drive by. Here is a summery painting of a bunch of pink dahlias to brighten up your day!

New Hampshire Farm - Watercolor Painting
Every year on my summertime trip to the White Mountains of New Hampshire, I pass this farm with mountains in the background. And every time, I want to just stop and paint a picture! I don't do that, but I've taken photos and painted from those. In this scene, it is sunset. The shadows are long and the sky tinged with pink. A few Hereford cows are grazing. Just look at how steep the roofs are on the barns, especially the one on the left. This will keep the heavy mountain snow from caving the roof in come winter. This scene brings me back to summer days in the mountains! Sea Shells - Watercolor Painting
Here are more shells from my seashell collection. I've painted them with a turquoise and coral pink background. I had so much fun with those colors - they remind me of the ocean and sand of a tropical island. Just right for a day when we've been buried in a foot of snow... Hope you are warm wherever you are and that this painting brings you to sunny places!
- This painting has been sold.
Black Crowned Night Heron - Watercolor Painting
I see this heron sometimes in an ocean inlet standing among the reeds. Here I've pictured it in a marsh. It has a long neck, but usually keeps it tucked down as in this painting, and stands still for hours until dusk. Then it takes off in flight to feed at dusk. I guess that's why it's called a night heron. The Black Crowned Night Heron is found all along the eastern seaboard from Canada to South America and also inland wherever there are marshes.- This painting has been sold.
White Daffodils, Narcissus - Watercolor Painting
Just the other day, the snow was melted enough in the gardens so that I could see little green shoots pointing up out of the ground. It's the daffodils. They are such hardy things, nothing kills them, even the freezing cold and snow. A good thing because last night we got a nor'easter, and today the daffs are covered with 12 inches of snow. I'm glad I saw them before the storm hit. I know that spring is really on the way!Tulips - Watercolor Painting
Tulips mean spring. We just had a big snowstorm, but it's March and spring is almost here. I love the sunlit quality of this scene. It was a delight to paint!- This painting has been sold.
