Monument Valley, Utah "Mittens"

These gigantic sandstone outcrops resembling mittens were formed from wind and water erosion of soft and hard sediment layers over the last 50 million years
Part of the Navajo Nation, Monument Valley is an area of overwhelming beauty with its miles of outcrops, vegetation, sand, mesas and buttes.

American Flamingos

This is an original art card painting, ACEO (Art Card Edition Original). The image size is the same as a baseball card.

American flamigos are wading birds as tall as Great Blue Herons but slimmer. When they feed on algae, crustaceans and small mollusks, their heads or bills are immersed in the water.
They are found on the Florida coast, West Indies, Yucatan and Galapagos Islands in salt flats and salt-water lagoons.

Sunflower Watercolor Painting

In this new painting of a sunflower, the flower head is starting to droop a bit which makes an interesting painting. Sunflowers have so much character that they are fun to paint and make a beautiful image in most any stage of flowering!
We had about a foot of new snow yesterday and the world was sparkling white in the sunshine today. With luck, it will stay until Christmas!

Monument Valley, Utah

This is one of my favorite scenes from a trip to Utah. Monument Valley is a place probably everyone has seen whether you've been there or not, as many westerns and commercials have been filmed there.
Great sandstone formations abound, the last remnants of what were once sandstone layers, eroded away over time. The red mesas and buttes are a deep rich color every bit as beautiful as the pictures you see on a postcard. If you visit, take the drive in the early morning or evening when the light is best.
In the rosy light of this hazy morning scene, some horses graze on the sandy desert plain.

Sunflower Watercolor Painting

I love the way this sunflower is reaching upward to greet the sun! Sunflowers are a warm memory at this time of year when it's dark and cold.
We've had a few light snowfalls recently which are just right for the season. One was a bit of an ice storm and every branch and twig was coated with crystal. When the sun came out, it was a wonderland!
Just yesterday, my family celebrated Christmas early. Even though it was only Dec. 8th, we all got together for a big Christmas dinner, tree decorated and presents exchanged.
The reason? My army son is home from Iraq on leave and he will have to go back before the 25th. We couldn't let him miss Christmas! It was a wonderful time with laughter and love as warm as the memory of this sunflower!

Morning Glories

Today I did a very lively painting of Heavenly Blue Morning Glories. There is movement in the flowers, leaves and vines as if you can see the plant actively growing toward the sun. I took a brush loaded with paint and splattered color on the bottom leaves as well to enhance the feeling of movement.
